Xu Zechen, one of China’a most promising young writers, was born in Jiangsu Province. When he left the small town of his birthplace to attend Peking University in Beijing, several of his compatriots moved there with him-not to attend university but to carve out lives for themselves in the capital city, in any way they could. Xu kept in touch with them over years and their stories were the basis for his earlier novels, such as RUNNING THROUGH ZHONGGUANCUN, MIDNIGHT’S GATE, and NIGHT TRAIN. His style tends towards well-paced realist narratives with finely drawn portraits of characters from all corners of the society, and a keen ear to dialogues. As he has matured as a writer, he has turned his attention to the lives and circumstances of Chinese people in their 30s-his own generation. The novel JERUSALEM represents his first major foray into this subject.
